For the sustainable business

1.Highly digestible feed
Kurose Suisan uses compound feed all the way from the fry to the adult stage. Solid compound feed digests at a much higher rate than other forms of feed, making it less contaminating to the sea from leftovers. Keeping the best quality of water for fish by choosing the right feed with less leftovers enables us to rear the high-quality Kurose Buri. Good feed brings about a healthy sustainable environment and highest quality of fish.
2.Monitoring of the environment
Kurose Suisan constantly monitors the environment to make sure our aquaculture is not causing a problem within the local area. The results of monitoring to date have been well within the established standard values. Studies have shown that our Kurose Buri’s impact on the environment is of little to no impact.
(*Surveys are conducted by collecting sediments from the seafloor of our sites and analyzing their composition at an external laboratory.)

3.Reducing the use of plastics
Microplastics are becoming a global issue and Kurose Suisan is required to reduce the use of oil-derived products. Our farm does not use any materials made of styrofoam. We are also testing recyclable cardboard packaging instead of using Styrofoam packaging. It is still a norm to use Styrofoam to carry fresh fish in Japan; however, Kurose Suisan is pioneering the way to a more environmentally friendly packaging.
4.Larger net pen to grow more efficiently
Historically, Kurose Buri had been reared in 10m square net pens; however, with the support of the Japanese government, the introduction of circular net pens with diameters of 30–35 meters is currently underway, and to date, 13 units have been installed. The volume of the pen is 18-times higher, and enable us to rear more number of Kurose Buri in one place. 25% of our fish are reared by the net pen. Introducion of these net pens contribute to the reduction of fuel by consolidating the amount of fish stocks and offshore operation. We are working to improve aquaculture efficiency while actively reducing environmental impact.

5.Improving loading efficiency
Kurose Suisan exports both fresh and frozen Kurose Buri. In case of frozen shipment, we use marine container. Improving the container load efficiency reduces the environmental impact. We have downsized the packaging and achieved higher container load in 2022. Kurose Suisan now can carry up to 4-times more volume than when we started. This enabled us to reduce the environmental impact from the transport.
